What is the Great Migration?

Driven by the primal instinct to find fresh grazing and water, the Great Migration is a continuous, year-round, circular trek spanning over 1,200 miles. It is a grueling journey dictated by the rains. Along the way, the herds face dramatic river crossings, crocodile-infested waters, and the ever-watchful eyes of Africa’s apex predators—lions, leopards, cheetahs, and hyenas.

The Migration Cycle: When and Where to Go

The Migration is a fluid, dynamic event, meaning there is no “single” time to see it. Depending on when you travel with us, your expert Tindiga Africa guides will track the herds to ensure you are in exactly the right place at the right time.

 Calving Season (Southern Serengeti)
January to March

The herds congregate in the nutrient-rich short grass plains of the southern Serengeti and Ndutu region. Around half a million calves are born in a matter of weeks, drawing high concentrations of predators. This is the best time for witnessing dramatic predator-prey interactions.

The Trek North (Central & Western Serengeti)
April to June

As the southern plains dry up, the massive columns begin moving north and west towards the Grumeti River. The rut (mating season) begins, and the plains are alive with aggressive displays from territorial males.

July to October

The most highly anticipated phase of the Migration. The herds face their biggest obstacle: the Mara River. Plunging into the rushing, crocodile-filled waters is a true test of survival. Tindiga Africa positions you at the best vantage points to witness this heart-stopping spectacle.

November to December

The short rains begin, drawing the herds back down from Kenya’s Maasai Mara through the eastern Serengeti, completing the cycle as they return to the southern plains to prepare for the next calving season.
